Virtual Rural
Open call for online residencies from 15 December 2021 to 15 March 2022

Our global pandemic experience, heading into our third year, has shown us the great substance and value that accessible and discoverable online archives are for artists and researchers, as well as for anyone with curiosity and a desire to virtually explore the world, both geographically and temporally.

Can an archive be a Place? Somewhere between the virtual and the actual, a place we can visit, interpret, shape with our perception and art. Somewhere we can find connection, and be connected, be changed by an experience, and leave something in return.

Can a context-specific artist residency in the rural mountains of the Viseu Dão Lafões region in Portugal, make an experimental and experiential shift from the Actual Place to the Virtual Place for a special residency within its Digital Archives; to make this virtual place sensible to the actual?

From Abril 2022 to September 2022, the Binaural Nodar Digital Archive will be that destination, that place outside to access and discover virtually, while remaining in one’s home. The residency is open to artists, students, researchers or educators to explore, discover and create, with support and guidance in language, location, themes, sounds, visuals, and other document searches, transcriptions and translations of oral histories, research and context of the actual Places represented virtually in the archive. Selected resident artists from a geographic distance will benefit from our full help, mediation, availability, and empathy towards their research and projects.

Online meetings to workshop evolving projects with the other residents can be arranged, as well as close engagement with the members and archivists of Binaural Nodar. Each selected artist will receive a gross amount of EUR 500 to develop his/her project and the final pieces will be presented in physical or virtual public contexts.

Possible concepts of exploration could include:

– the virtual and actual;
– here and there;
– digital rurality;
– what is an archive?;
– art and the archive;
– empathy in the archive;
– archives for education;
– place and space in the archives;
– listening in the archive;
– the rural life as an archive;
– archiving the rural life;
– ecologies in the archive;
-archiving as an art methodology;
-sensorial representations and politics of the ethnographic archive;
-exploring the themes of the archive’s main collections
-the themes of Binaural Nodar’s past artist residencies, for example: riverscapes, voicespaces, rural architecture, religion, mobility in rural contexts, relationship with the animal world, psychologic aspects of rural contexts, etc.
