Blacksmith’s Workshop
(Travessa do Ferreiro, Paraduça)
An initiative of the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports, and Recreational Association in collaboration with the Calde Civil Parish Council, the Municipality of Viseu, and Binaural Nodar.
This activity is also part of the cultural program of Rede Tramontana, a project co-financed by the Creative Europe Program, as well as the official initiatives of the European Heritage Days 2025.
In recent years, the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports, and Recreational Association has carried out the renovation of a building of high heritage value: a fulling mill located on the banks of the Vouga River near the village of Paraduça. The fulling mill is a building with a rotating wooden mechanism used to make “burel” (loden), a type of waterproof wool fabric that was traditionally used to make hoods.
Over the last few months, a series of community activities have been developed in the village, including collections on the role of wool and burel and on the history of the pisão, a sound tour, and interpretive visits to other architectural elements of the village, such as the Blacksmith’s Workshop, which was restored a few years ago as a museum space.
The activity “Wool, Fulling, Loden” represents the culmination of this program of activities, including a visit to the blacksmith’s workshop, a walk through the village and to the banks of the Vouga River, an interpretive visit on how fulling works, an audiovisual installation entitled “Wool, Fulling, Loden” which expresses the cycle of audiovisual recordings in a contemporary narrative, an exhibition of wool and burel fabrics from the local community, and ending with a gastronomic gathering with the local population.
The event is free of charge and no reservation is required. Just show up at 9:30 am at Travessa do Ferreiro de Paraduça.
Binaural Nodar is a cultural organization supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth, and Sports | Directorate-General for the Arts.
