As part of the project “Landscapes, Voices, and Flavors of the Ukrainian Community in Viseu”, the culinary research gathering “Flavors of Ukraine” took place on June 27th at Casa da Ribeira, attended by the Councilor of the Municipality of Viseu, Dr. Pedro Ribeiro, the President of the Calde Civil Parish Council, Mr. Hermenegildo Ribeiro, the members of the Viseu Civil Parish Council, Fernanda Almeida and Alberto Costa, representatives of Casa do Brasil de Viseu, as well as members of the Grupo Etnográfico de Trajes e Cantares do Linho de Várzea de Calde, in addition to the Ukrainian community, the Casa da Ribeira team, and the co-organizing associations, the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu and Binaural Nodar.

During the event, Ukrainian identity was explored through another fundamental dimension of this country’s culture: its cuisine, both in its regional specificities and in those linked to the cycle of the year. Through the flavors of Ukraine, the project’s partners and friends got to know a little more about the traditions, diversity, and richness of Ukrainian cultural heritage. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the sharing of traditional songs from Ukraine and from Várzea de Calde, as well as the demonstration of the artisanal process of transforming linen, a fabric that is a symbol of both Várzea de Calde and the Ukrainian nation.

This event marked the start of the second phase of the project, developed in partnership with the Association of Ukrainians in Viseu, with the support of the Municipality of Viseu, through Casa da Ribeira and the Várzea de Calde Linen Museum, with the support of the Calde Civil Parish Council, and co-funded by the Creative Europe program within the Tramontana Network project and by the Directorate-General for the Arts.
