TRAMONTANA IN MONTEMURO
International Artist Residency
August 15th to September 12th, 2026
Parada de Ester (Castro Daire)
NOMOS
Francesca Migliorin (Italy)
In Nomos, Francesca Migliorin deepens her knowledge of agropastoralism and transhumance, practices inseparable from rural culture and witnesses of an ancient harmony between people and nature. Coming from Upper Piedmont (Biella), where agropastoralism still has a strong economic, social and scenic impact, the artist focuses on the seasonal migration of livestock between the valley and the mountains as intangible cultural heritage. One of her fondest memories is watching, as a child with her grandmother, the transhumance pass along the road in front of her family’s house.
She is interested in the relationship between nomadic space, where the path is the symbolic place in which community life takes place, and erratic space, and in what remains in the passage: the traces left between fullness and emptiness. In the Montemuro mountains she walked, observed and photographed the transhumance routes, in dialogue with the local community, farmers and shepherds, using the pinhole technique with self-made equipment, which produces black and white images whose exposure is determined by sunlight. The project foresees the photographs returning to the places where they were made, mounted on metal tubes planted in the ground.
A co-production of Binaural Nodar and the Municipality of Castro Daire, through the Municipal Library, with the support of the Union of Civil Parishes of Parada de Ester and Ester, within the Tramontana Network project, co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
Binaural Nodar is a cultural organization supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth and Sports | Directorate-General for the Arts.
Francesca Migliorin (Biella, Italy, 1998) graduated in Graphic Design (2021) and Photography (2024) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, experimenting with photography and changing printing techniques, combining different materials. She investigates emotional narratives related to surroundings, light, dwelling and cohabitation. Corporeality, in relation to her own frailties and memories, allows her to delve into the intersection of photography and installation. Among others, she has exhibited at AlleOrtiche, Palazzo Grillo, Studio Florìda, Giardini Luzzati and Nucleo21. She is currently an active part of Studio Florìda and collaborates with the gallery Campo XS, Genoa.
