SOUND WALK TO THE STOMP MILL
Saturday, May 24, 9:00 a.m.
Paraduça (Calde, Viseu, Portugal)
Meeting point:
Blacksmith’s Workshop
(Travessa do Ferreiro, Paraduça)
An event of the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports and Recreational Association in collaboration with the Calde Civil Parish Council, the Municipality of Viseu and Binaural Nodar. This event is part of the Creative Europe co-funded Tramontana Network.
In recent years, the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports, and Recreational Association has been renovating a building of great heritage value: a stomp mill located on the banks of the Vouga River near the village of Paraduça.
The stomp mill is a building with a wooden rotating mechanism that activates a pair of stone stomps used to make “burel”, waterproof woolen fabrics that were once used to make traditional capes (“capuchas”).
Taking advantage of the existence of another renovated building in the village of Paraduça, a blacksmith’s workshop with a forge and a small museum and interpretation space, the sound walk will start at this location, with some background information on the history of the village’s family of blacksmiths, and will follow a trail to the Vouga River, where participants will be able to listen to and record the soundscape with various microphones provided by Binaural Nodar, a partner of the event.
The walk will end with an introduction to how the stomp mill worked and a chance to socialize with the local population.
The sound walk is free and does not require reservations. Just show up at 9:00 a.m. at Travessa do Ferreiro de Paraduça.
Binaural Nodar is a organization supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture | Directorate-General for the Arts.
