FIELD RECORDINGS & SOUND EDITING
Summer School
July 28th and 29th, 2026
Presentation: August 1st, 2026
Granja Ativa 2026 — International Work Camp
Granja (Mões, Castro Daire).
On July 28th and 29th, the Binaural Nodar association is organizing the summer school Field Recordings & Sound Editing in the village of Granja (civil parish of Mões, municipality of Castro Daire). The initiative is part of Granja Ativa 2026 — International Work Camp, and offers participants a hands-on immersion in field sound recording techniques, exploring the unique landscape and ethnographic contexts of this mountain village in the municipality of Castro Daire.
Over the two days of work, participants will be invited to capture the sounds of the local soundscape — from the natural textures of the rural surroundings to the voices, trades, and memories of its people — and to transform these recordings into sound narratives through editing and montage processes. It is an exercise that is both technical and sensitive, bringing together listening, recording, and creation, and inviting participants to hear the territory as raw material for artistic composition.
This initiative is co-funded by the Portuguese Republic — Directorate-General for the Arts — and by the European Union, through the Tramontana Network project, part of the Creative Europe program. It also marks a symbolic date: the 20 years of sound education work that Binaural Nodar has been developing in rural contexts of the Viseu Dão Lafões region, through a continued practice of listening and sound creation shared with local communities.
The Field Recordings & Sound Editing activity continues a path of educational projects that, over two decades, have combined field research and sound composition with young people and adults: from Aldeias Sonoras (2007-2011) to Silêncio, que se vai escutar Carvalhais (2009), through the Nodar Summer School (2012-2013), Ouço Lembro e Sinto (2015-2026), and Sketch & Sound (2018-2026). The result of this work will be presented to the public on August 1st, as part of the closing event of Granja Ativa 2026.
Binaural Nodar is a professional cultural organization supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth, and Sports | Directorate-General for the Arts.
