VOUGASCAPES – Art and Landscape in Oliveira de Frades is a multidisciplinary contemporary exhibition featuring works by ten artists from seven countries, who were hosted by Binaural Nodar with support from the Municipality of Oliveira de Frades over several periods throughout 2016, with the Vouga river reservoir in the village of Casal de Sejães chosen as the site for the fieldwork, as it clearly shows the impacts resulting from the Ribeiradio dam coming into operation. The various artists produced a body of work (predominantly drawing, sound and video) reflecting the changing landscape, as well as the memory and expectations of the local population regarding this same change brought about by the new reality of the dam and its current and imagined future impacts.

These works fit perfectly within the working philosophy followed by Binaural/Nodar since 2006 in the Viseu Dão Lafões Intermunicipal Community region, which proposes an immersion of the hosted artists in the surrounding rural territory, with the association acting as mediator between the inhabitants and the artists, thereby favouring the context-specific nature of the works created, which are returned to the local populations themselves at the end of the hosted artists’ stay.

The works on display also result from two structural partnerships of Binaural/Nodar: the first with the Master’s course in Contemporary Artistic Creation at the University of Aveiro, which since 2009 has co-organised an artistic residency with Binaural/Nodar in locations in the Lafões region (three of the artists are teachers – Graça Magalhães – and students – Albano Ribeiro and António Rato – of the aforementioned master’s programme), and the second, with the Network #SOCCOS – European Network of Artistic Residencies in Sound Arts, of which Binaural/Nodar is an active member and through which an artistic residency was organised in the summer of 2016 that included all the foreign artists present in the exhibition and whose presence was proposed by partner members of the aforementioned network (Q-O2, Belgium / Hai Art, Finland / CCA Castle, Poland / DISK BERLIN / CTM Festival, Germany).
