The work is the result of a long three-year period of ethnographic research in the village of Várzea de Calde, carried out by the Binaural/Nodar association in close collaboration with the Casa de Lavoura e Oficina do Linho – Museu Etnográfico de Várzea de Calde – Museus de Viseu, the Calde Parish Council, the Grupo Etnográfico de Trajes e Cantares do Linho and the Cooperativa do Linho de Várzea de Calde, also being part of Réseau Tramontana, a project funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission.
The publication highlights the merits of a collaborative work that brought into close relationship the Municipality of Viseu, one of its museum spaces, rural communities of the municipality and cultural structures of the region, in work beneficial to all, valuing the complementarity of approaches and the role of civil society and its agents in the dissemination of cultural heritage.
The publication fixes, materializes and organizes cultural documentation that is often dispersed in the memory of various people, fostering a shareable “know-how” with the world, of how a tradition as arduous and complex as that of flax truly exists.
The publication was coordinated by Luis Gomes da Costa, with graphic design and illustrations by Liliana Silva, text transcription by Diana Silva and English translation by Margarete Silva, featuring texts by Luis Gomes da Costa, Manuela Barile, Elisabete Figueiredo and Vastaman Alessandro, with a preface by Dr. Jorge Sobrado, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Viseu.
The publication will soon be on sale at the Casa de Lavoura e Oficina do Linho – Museu Etnográfico de Várzea de Calde.
