TRANSHUMANCE COLLECTION PROJECT

Binaural Nodar’s coordinator, Luís Costa, took part in a project collecting sound and audiovisual recordings on the transhumance of sheep flocks that takes place annually between the mountains of Tyrol (Austria) and South Tyrol (Italy), a centuries-old tradition linked to ancient grazing rights granted to shepherds in the Italian valleys along the border with Austria.
This collection project is part of the Creative Europe Tramontana Project, which between 2024 and 2027 will develop an extensive body of activities involving documentation, cataloguing, artistic creation and cultural dissemination about Europe’s mountains, including 11 partners from 7 countries: Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Romania, Albania and Poland.
In addition, these recordings are linked to the Memória Sobre Rodas (Memory on Wheels) project, regarding research on the Last Transhumance Route of Castro Daire, a joint initiative of Binaural Nodar and Castro Daire – Municipal Library, with international outreach activities planned for this tradition that takes place in the Montemuro mountain range.
