On March 19, in Parada de Ester, the Castro Daire Municipality and Binaural/Nodar presented the project “Memória Sobre Rodas” (“Memory on Wheels”), an integrated ethnographic research initiative on the municipality’s rich cultural heritage, which includes, among other novelties, the use of an existing resource — the bookmobile of the Castro Daire Municipal Library — which will also become a mobile sound and audiovisual recording studio.

This initiative will call on the collaboration of local people and entities such as parish councils, associations, civic movements, specialists and those interested in cultural heritage issues, so that a wide range of contributions can help systematise heritage knowledge in the form of a catalogued digital archive available online, and develop a set of parallel actions such as enriching the Castro Daire Municipal Museum and the Montemuro and Paiva Interpretation and Information Centre with new content, developing educational activities aimed at the community — with particular emphasis on engaging younger generations (thus promoting intergenerational sharing of knowledge) — and designing events in the fields of cultural tourism and artistic creation, in close collaboration with local entities already doing valuable work in these areas.

The motto of the “Memória sobre Rodas” project is “the heritage is us”, a way of highlighting that ethnographic knowledge resides in every village, every house and every family, forming part of the flow of memories passed down from our ancestors — memories that urgently need to be cared for, shared and carried into the future, so that the municipality of Castro Daire becomes ever more recognised for its absolutely unique geographical and cultural context.
