WOOL, FULLING MILL, LODEN
Community Event
Saturday, September 20th,
Paraduça (Calde, Viseu)
An initiative of the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports, and Recreational Association in collaboration with the Calde Civil Parish Council, the Municipality of Viseu, and Binaural Nodar, this event was part of the Rede Tramontana cultural program, co-financed by Creative Europe, and an official initiative of the 2025 European Heritage Days.
In recent years, the Paraduça Social, Cultural, Sports, and Recreational Association restored a building of high heritage: a fulling mill by the Vouga River, once used to make “burel” (loden), a traditional waterproof wool fabric. Leading up to the event, several community activities took place, including collections on the role of wool and burel and on the history of the pisão, a sound tour, and interpretive visits to other architectural elements of the village, such as the Blacksmith’s Workshop.
The event “Wool, Fulling Mill, Loden” marked the culmination of this work, featuring guided village walks, an interpretive tour of the fulling mill, an audiovisual installation, a local fabric exhibition, and a communal meal.
