FRESH WATER, SALT WATER
Artist Residency
September 18 to 30, 2023
Reriz and Vila Nova (Castro Daire)
Rincón de Paiva (Cerro Largo, Uruguay)

With Vittoria Assembri, Luís Costa and Ana Rodríguez

A co-production of Binaural Nodar with the Municipality of Castro Daire, in partnership with Amaneï Salina, Mapa sonoro de Uruguay, the Union of Parishes of Reriz and Gafanhão and the Parish Council of Pinheiro.

The first artist residency of the “Fresh Water, Salt Water” cycle took place between September 18th and 30th, with fieldwork carried out in two villages located on both banks of the River Paiva, Reriz and Vila Nova, as well as in a town in the north of Uruguay with a very familiar place name: Rincón de Paiva. The final presentation to the community took place on the banks of the River Paiva, next to the footbridge that connects the villages of Reriz and Vila Nova.

What is the “soul of the place” of each village bathed by a river and/or a stream? How does the presence of water influence the worldview of its inhabitants? What is specific about living on each bank of a river? How has the relationship between places and water and its uses changed over the decades? These are some of the general questions addressed through the artistic fieldwork of Vittoria Assembri, Luís Costa and Ana Rodríguez.

The second artist residency of this cycle “Fresh Water, Salt Water” will take place between October 8th and 20th in the town of Santa Marina di Salina (Aeolian Islands, Italy) with the participation of Elettra Bottazzi, Luís Costa and Ana Rodríguez.

Binaural Nodar is a cultural organization supported by the Portuguese Government – Culture | Directorate-General for the Arts.
