ECOS DO DOM (“Echoes of gift”)
Creative Residence
September 25th to October 25th, 2020
Várzea de Calde (Civil Parish of Calde, Municipality of Viseu)

Uruguayan anthropologist Ana Rodríguez develops between September 25th and October 25th a creative residence in the rural territory of Várzea de Calde (Municipality of Viseu). Ana Rodríguez has been working with memory, sound and orality in rural contexts and this time the focus of her intervention are the traditional practices linked to care and health of the individual and the community, which have been transformed over time but that still persist in countries like Portugal and Uruguay.

During her presence, an inquiry will be made about these permanences and how they are currently meant by users. In these processes that can help restore health, some plants may intervene, as well as narrations transmitted orally over generations by people who lived or still live in the rural world.

The current work resumes some trails that began to be covered last year with the project “Spoken plants – Vegetable memory archive”, which retrospective exhibition is shown at the Linen Museum of Várzea de Calde until the end of the year, and its conclusion will consist in the publication of a bilingual book “Ecos do Dom” (“Echoes of gift”) that will include a vast set of photographs that illustrate the sensorial landscape related to the mentioned practices.

This creative residence is part of Binaural Nodar’s Viseu Rural 2.0 project that is co-financed by the Viseu Cultura Program of the Municipality of Viseu and which has the support of the Linen Museum of Várzea de Calde.
