NAVE ESCUTATÓRIA. FICTION
Fictional practices of listening and territorial transduction

An artistic project by Luciano Piccilli (Argentina)
September 21st to October 15th
Vouzela (Portugal)

What if the sound of the landscape could materialize into an image? This was the starting point of “Nave Escutatória. Fiction”, the artist residency that hosted the artist Luciano Piccilli in Vouzela, from September 21st to October 15th.

During this period, Luciano Piccilli challenged students from the Vouzela Vocational School to take part in the various stages of the community project, which, symbolically, was based at the municipal plant nursery.

In a first phase, sound recordings were made of the Zela river and the surrounding landscape, along with the collection of natural materials: leaves, sand, stones, acorns, among others. Then, the device that transforms sound, through its vibrations, into images was built, creating a visual score of the territory. The photograms took shape through traditional chemical and analog processes, which the students were also able to try out.

The final result was presented to the public on October 14th, in an exhibition of the images created by the students. The presentation was attended by the Councillor for Culture, Inês Paiva, the pedagogical director of EPV, José Lino Tavares, the teacher João Batista, the students and the local community.

For Luís Costa, coordinator of Binaural Nodar, this residency brought together “two apparently distinct universes, photography and sound, through a physical and analog approach”. “It is a proposal that makes particular sense for a generation that has grown up surrounded by screens, and that offers it another way of looking and listening.”

Luciano Piccilli (born in 1991) is an Argentine visual and sound artist and researcher, based in Buenos Aires. His work focuses on the intersection between audiovisual exploration and acoustic landscapes.
