It was the spring of 2011 when the MCAC/UA teachers and students travelled for the first time to the rural area of Lafões (São Pedro do Sul, Vouzela, Oliveira de Frades), in co-production with Binaural Nodar, to foster a context of site-specific artistic development and communication with local communities. Since then, every year and for four days, the concept of hosting master’s students in a rural context has been deepened, fostering a sense of empathy with rural places, artistic practices in communion with the landscape and its memories and the discovery of sound as a crucial element of reality and as a layer that can be used in multiple ways in the context of contemporary art today.

The retrospective exhibition “Between times and places: 10 years of MCAC/UA and Binaural Nodar artist residencies” and the accompanying catalog establish a sensitive journey between “times”, the years from 2011 to 2021, and places, the multiple localities of the municipalities of Lafões, and this journey is enriched by a set of interactive works inspired by the memories of the artist residencies, which were created this academic year in the context of the MCAC/UA Art Installation Projects module. The design and assembly of the exhibition was carried out by the MCAC/UA and Binaural Nodar teams with the contribution of the students enrolled in the Master’s module on Exhibition Design and Organization.
