THE RURAL IN US
A cycle of gatherings led by Binaural Nodar at the Outono Quente Festival

From October 2nd to 4th, Binaural Nodar led the cycle of gatherings “The Rural in Us”, part of the Outono Quente Festival organized by Zunzum Associação Cultural. The sessions took place in the late afternoon, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and were led by Luís Costa, researcher and coordinator of Binaural Nodar.

The starting point was the gradual transformation of the rural world of the Viseu region and the questions it legitimately raises: What remains of ancestral traditions? Are the villages still alive? What other aspects have changed? What is the role of art and culture in understanding rural contexts and in listening attentively to their communities?

The first gathering, on October 2nd, was dedicated to ways of documenting and expressing rural memory and to the role of museums, archives, libraries and folk groups, with Marta Carvalhal, director of the Castro Daire Municipal Library, and Liliana Tavares, from Rancho Folclórico de Mundão. The following day, under the title “The rural that comes from afar”, representatives of iO Association of Ukrainians in Viseu spoke about rural memories linked to the regions of Ukraine where several of its members come from.

On October 4th, the conversation focused on contemporary art in a rural context, with the Argentine sound artist Luciano Piccilli, around rural sounds and the transatlantic connections between Argentina and Portugal. The last gathering, scheduled for October 5th and dedicated to listening to silence in rural spaces, was cancelled, as the Portuguese researcher and sound artist Tomás Quintais was unable to attend due to an unforeseen circumstance.
