SOUNDING THE INTERSTICE
Acoustic ecologies, multisensoriality, and translocal connections
Intensive Seminar
Led by Luís Gomes da Costa
May 21st, 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (GMT-6)
The coordinator of Binaural Nodar, Luís Gomes da Costa, will lead a 4-hour intensive online seminar on May 21st as part of the diploma program “De lo audible a lo aural”, organized by the Fonoteca Nacional de México in collaboration with the Ibermemoria Sonora, Fotográfica y Audiovisual Program of the Ibero-American General Secretariat.
This seminar explores Binaural Nodar’s more than 20 years of practice at the intersection of sound and audiovisual anthropology and sound and media art in the rural Portuguese region of Viseu Dão Lafões, focusing on the concept of «intermediality» («In-betweenness») between senses, media, and places. It will examine how sound can function as an instrument that makes it possible to blur the boundaries between the various senses and art forms in order to create multisensory experiences with multiple meanings. The session will also delve into the capacity of sound to connect distant places, using multi-sited and comparative ethnographies as conceptual inspiration and presenting sound projects that open dialogues between diverse acoustic environments.
This seminar is co-produced by Binaural Nodar and is also part of the research activities carried out by the author within the Doctoral Program in Artistic Creation and his involvement in the work of two research centers, ID+ (DeCA/University of Aveiro) and LiDA (ESAD Caldas da Rainha).
Binaural Nodar is a cultural organization supported by the Portuguese Republic – Culture, Youth, and Sports | Directorate-General for the Arts.
