1. Creative Proposal<\/p>\n
“Plato, in his golden age, under Saturn, includes among the chief privileges of man of that time that of being able to communicate with animals. Thus, by questioning and studying them, he knew exactly the faculties of each, as well as their differences, which made his reasoning sharper, his prudence more perfect and his conduct in life more efficient.”<\/p>\n

HOMO ET BESTIA \u2013 Expressions of the human-animal relationship in a rural context is the theme of Binaural\/Nodar’s artistic residencies programme for 2018 and 2019, which focuses on the creative potential of engaging with biological, ecological, historical, literary, ethological, anthropological and audiovisual documentation on human-animal relations in the rural Portuguese region of Laf\u00f5es, in order to produce a series of artistic works focused on soundscapes, sound art, sound poetry, radio art, site-specific performance\/installations, audiovisual documentaries and, in general, media arts<\/p>\n
The proposal for the residencies programme stems from the ancestral importance of animals in rural regions, which is in constant evolution and discussion, particularly through the incorporation of recent trends related to animal rights, the tension between organic versus industrial agriculture and, generally, the slow decline of “pure” rural contexts, where many of their uses are being replaced or abandoned, thus generating a vast series of memories and contrasts with contemporary approaches to animals.<\/p>\n
The programme’s proposal may also address forgotten documents, namely from regional and personal archives (examples: breeding manuals, veterinary records, animal trading documents, old photos of human-animal interactions, diaries, etc.)<\/p>\n
Possible themes to be addressed in artistic residency applications:<\/p>\n
– Animals in rural myths, oral memory and sacred ceremonies.
\n– Animals in rural\/regional literature
\n– Animal mobility driven by transhumance, trade, transport, hunting and species reintroduction
\n– The instrumentalisation of animals for agricultural purposes, namely through the use of mechanical or craft devices (carts, ploughs, etc.)
\n– Past and present trends regarding animals as pets, food and labour force.
\n– The literary\/sound potential in the use of animal vocalisations
\n– Choreographic\/spatial aspects of animal behaviour
\n– Ethical questioning of ancestral and modern ways of dealing with animals<\/p>\n
The artistic residencies will take place at various times between September 2018 and October 2019.<\/p>\n
2. Application<\/p>\n
a) In the selection process, the following types of artistic work will be given priority: electroacoustic\/vocal music\/sound art compositions; permanent or ephemeral installations; radio art; free improvisation and performance works.<\/p>\n
b) Applications are only accepted if sent by 28 February 2018, exclusively by email to info@binauralmedia.org with the subject “Application for Artistic Residency”<\/p>\n
c) The application (a pdf, doc, zip file or a link to Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) must include the following information:<\/p>\n
Proposal for the artistic project to be developed (indicating working methodology and planned timeline);
\nBrief artistic biography (maximum two paragraphs) and Curriculum Vitae;
\nWeb links to the artist(s)’ previous works;
\nMaterial and technical needs of the project;
\nProposed time period for the artistic residency.<\/p>\n

3. About Binaural\/Nodar<\/p>\n
Binaural \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Cultural de Nodar (BINAURAL\/NODAR) is a Portuguese non-profit cultural organisation founded in 2004 with the aim of promoting research in sound\/media arts, focusing on the crossing of media and aesthetic languages and on the articulation between creative production, academic research in social and environmental sciences and the surrounding rural context of the Gralheira and Caramulo mountain ranges (Viseu D\u00e3o Laf\u00f5es Region, Portugal), where the organisation carries out most of its activities.<\/p>\n
BINAURAL\/NODAR carries out activities of creation, production, promotion, research, documentation and teaching with the aim of establishing itself as a platform for experimentation and sharing of theoretical and methodological thinking in the fields of technology, artistic practice and sound\/visual anthropological documentation of its rural context.<\/p>\n
BINAURAL\/NODAR is run by an international team of social researchers, cultural managers, artists and curators (with more than 12 years of activity). The board is made up of three people with deep roots in and\/or many years living in the rural area of intervention.<\/p>\n
Underlying BINAURAL\/NODAR’s activities is the concern to establish connections between the sound\/visual arts and the surrounding anthropological and geographical environment, supporting documentation projects, artistic residencies and public events aimed at diverse audiences and dealing with their capacity to generate meanings and (re)construct identity and memory.<\/p>\n
Since March 2006, more than 150 international sound\/media artists and social scientists have developed projects in the area in close connection with the region’s communities. As a thematic background for the works produced, aspects such as collective memory, identity, gender and age, life and death, geography, topography, music, sound heritage, landscape, vegetation, water and fire, consumption and leisure dynamics, myths and traditions, crafts, agriculture and grazing have already been addressed.<\/p>\n
Throughout the year, the organisation schedules various residency modules, in order to stimulate a collaborative environment among artists and researchers from different fields and geographical backgrounds. During the course of the residencies, several parallel activities are organised, such as conferences, lectures and educational activities (aimed at children and youth). At the end of each artistic residency module, a public presentation is organised in the village, at which the different projects are presented and discussed by the authors and the organisation.<\/p>\n
Laf\u00f5es Cult Lab is the technological, logistical and curatorial platform through which project development is carried out, using audiovisual technologies and languages and a permanent dialogue with the various aspects that make up the region. Many of the projects carried out at Laf\u00f5es Cult Lab are interdisciplinary in nature, that is, they cross different artistic, scientific and craft practices, often cancelling their boundaries in search of hybrid meanings that can broaden their expressive and functional possibilities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
