Weaving Sound: Interdisciplinary Art in the Evolving Landscape
\n<\/strong>A research residency with Maya McCollum

\nV\u00e1rzea de Calde (Viseu, Portugal)<\/p>\n

A residency hosted by Binaural Nodar with local support by the Municipality of Viseu and the Civil Parish of Calde and co-funded by a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship<\/p>\n

Maya McCollum will be hosted by Binaural Nodar in the village of V\u00e1rzea de Calde, in the context of a Fellowship to work with sound, textile craft traditions, and contemporary technologies to reimagine locally, environmentally grounded making within contexts of climate change and industrialization. Maya namely seeks to learn on how artists engage with communities and their histories in ways that are mutually beneficial, enriching the community as well as the art making process.<\/p>\n

Maya McCollum is a sound artist and researcher from the U.S, currently studying the intersection of traditional fiber craft and contemporary listening\/sound technologies. Within the modalities of fiber arts and field recording, gathering, both sonic and material, has the ability to help us form different understandings of place through multisensory approaches to observation and intimacy. Maya\u2019s practice often utilizes a combination of animation, projection mapping, performance, and sculptural techniques, exploring how our technological and material practices have all been imprinted on the landscapes around us, carving our stories into the land and forming a memory of our presence.<\/p>\n
