Collective Memory Workshop \u201cMy map of the neighborhood\u201d

Thousands of people from the Castro Daire municipality traveled throughout the 20th century to the eastern part of Lisbon to work in many of the factories and warehouses there. Most of them lived in shanty towns, the best known being “Chinatown”. How did these people orient themselves in a space that was complex, full of alleys, holms, fields and factories and in which shacks did not appear on official maps? What names did people give to different places in the neighborhood? Where were the weekend meetings? What paths did they follow from home to work and vice versa?<\/p>\n

The collective memory workshop \u201cMy map of the neighborhood\u201d, to be held at the Municipal Library of Castro Daire on November 29th 2019, starting at 10 am, will try to answer some of the questions through the use of participatory collective mapping tools. The workshop will be promoted by Binaural Nodar in co-production with the library team, being part both of an ethnographic collection project entitled \u201cMemory on Wheels\u201d and of \u201cFrom the Mountain to the Factory\u201d project, part of the European network \u201cWhere the city loses its name\u201d which includes Binaural Nodar, LaFundici\u00f3 (Catalonia, Spain) and Fundatia Altart (Cluj, Romania).<\/p>\n

Registration in this workshop can be made through the Castro Daire Municipal Library (Tel. 232 319 150 \/ email: biblioteca@cm-castrodaire.pt) until November 28th, and is aimed at people who have lived or still live in the Marvila area and were born in the municipality of Castro Daire.<\/p>\n<\/div>
