Rui Costa

Rui Costa is a sound artist from Lisbon, Portugal. He has been performing live for more than 10 years. He is a founding member and artistic director of Binaural, an organization dedicated to the promotion of sound and media arts, in particular its articulation with local contexts. Binaural runs an artistic residency space in Nodar, a small village in the north of Portugal.

He has performed in many cities across Portugal, Spain and United States with such musicians as Paulo Raposo, Iñaki Ríos, Manuela Barile, Natividad Plasencia, Pablo Rega, Nilo Gallego, Toshio Kajiwara, Casey Rice, Lê Quan Ninh, Richard Antez, John Herndon, André Gonçalves, Carlos Santos, Emídio Buchinho and Miguel Carvalhais.

Since 1999, Rui Costa has been collaborating with the Spanish musician Iñaki Ríos, under the name ja_dijiste, in several areas of artistic expression, such as sound art, free improvisation, video creation and net art. Ja_dijiste have developed several conceptual projects, presented in art galleries and concert spaces across Portugal and Spain. As an example, it is worth mentioning the intermedia work “Nodar”, premiered in 2002 at the Musica Ex Machina festival, in Bilbao, Spain and Nodar: Espaços Vivos”, developed in 2006 at the “Nodar Pushing the Medium #2”, intermedia arts symposium.

Rui’s artistic expression favours the creation of intricate sonic textures through computer-based sound manipulation techniques and using as a source field recordings and live sampling of acoustical instruments. He is also a regular speaker in conferences / workshops dedicated to sound art
